Bikers get bang for bucks on gondola season pass prices

Mountain bike nuts will get more bang for their bucks in the resort this year.

Tourism giant Skyline has set its inaugural eight-month season pass prices for gondola access to its trails at Bob’s Peak – and has landed a national downhill event too.

Riders wanting lifts up to the newly-named Queenstown Bike Park will fork out $599 for the season, Mountain Scene can reveal.

Bikers can access Ben Lomond Reserve trails from September 4 till April 29, weather permitting.

Riders had to stump up $475 for a pass during an initial four-month trial period from January to April this year, so Skyline boss Jeff Staniland expects the new price to be well received.

“Gondola access sort of captured everyone’s imagination and everyone’s been pleasantly surprised with how it has worked,” Staniland says. “At least we don’t have to wait for snow,” he quips.

During the trial run, gondola access pulled a number of high profile riders to town – including the three Atherton siblings, stars on the international circuit, for a two-month training stint.

Along with biking celebrities, gondola access has also attracted a NZ Mountain Bike Cup national downhill series event on January 7 and 8.

And the second Queenstown Bike Festival is locked in for next Easter from March 31 till April 9, event organiser Geoff Hunt says.

He adds the resort continues to grow as a biking destination, with about 100 riders at a recent night ride at Seven Mile.

“If you did that a year ago, there might have been 25 bikers,” Hunt says.

“What the gondola did was change the dynamics.

“It was busy last season, it’ll be a lot busier this season for sure.”

New Queenstown Mountain Bike Club president Tom Hey also thinks punters will be “pleasantly surprised” with pass prices.

But he warns someone still needs to take control of trails and maintenance patrols.

“It’s a good community asset but it needs to be managed,” Hey says.

Hey predicts more northern hemisphere riders will be pulled to the resort for training, but warns trail development also needs to continue or riders will get bored.

Despite the full-length season, Staniland says Skyline is still perfecting the mountain biking model – and it hasn’t made a decision to provide access in the long-term to the Queenstown Lakes District Council-run reserve.

Staniland adds work on the QBP needs to progress, and he has made a submission to council for funding.

Vertigo Bikes gets feature in Dirt Magazine!

This was an exciting suprise for us at Vertigo Bikes. We got the new dirt through the post box and we opened it up to find a double page spread all about us and what we do, how good is that! New Zealand and Queenstown has been getting a lot of publicity recently about it riding and being a great southern hemisphere destination which is great to see. The opening of the Skyline Gondola to mountain bikers this year has definitely sparked a boom in mountain biking in Queenstown, and now the wheels are in motion it is going to be interesting to see where it goes from here, but we at Vertigo intend to be at the forefront of it all, being the only mountain bike specific shop in Queenstown, coupled with all our guiding and coaching experience. What this space....

Vertigo Bikes One Square Meal Zerode DH Bike

Vertigo Boss Tim Ceci showing off the "One Square Meal" ZERODE DH bike, which we finished building up only a few days ago. It has been fully tricked out with Shimano Saint groupset and Rockshox Boxxer WC fork. I think you will agree this is one amazing looking bike.
The One Square Meal bike will be available for demo use to Queenstown Mountain Bike Club members, for a nominal fee of $25 plus purchasing a One Square Meal bar (which are delicious and will keep you riding longer anyway!). But only for use on the Skyline Gondola trails. Contatc Vertigo Bikes for more details.

Vertigo doing Norco bikes for 2011

Vertigo is doing a select range of the 2011 Norco bikes this summer, the one we are most excited about is the new Norco DH, which is a full on DH race ready rig that is going to retail for $3999!!! The bike is rumored to weigh in a under 40lbs, comes with the new Rock Shox Boxxer RC CL, Avid Elixer 5's and a Fox Van R Coil rear shock. The angles are superb too, low and slack with a 64 degree head angle and low bottom bracket height to keep the center of gravity slammed for maximum corner railing ability! Yeow!

New World Class Mechanic on board this year!

Vertigo bikes has hired the services of new Queenstown resident Shaun Kirton. Shaun stood head and shoulders above the rest when we were looking for a new mountain bike guru this summer. Shaun worked as the Team Yeti world Cup mechanic for a season, so is seriously handy on the spanners and knows a thing or two about suspension set up, working closely with the Fox racing shox guys!
He is going to be taking charge of our workshop and has helped create a new workshop menu to help people choose the right service for their bike.
We welcome you Shaun to the team! :-)

Queenstown Riding Article

A nice article on the Spoke Mountain Bike Magazine website on some of the riding in Queenstown, mostly up the Skyline Hill (Ben Lomond Forest) where alot of the hidden gems are to be found. This area does give you access to all the best steep technical terrain with some amazing trails up there, and the network is constantly evolving. You definitely earn your turns as you do have to power your own way up there, no gondolas or chairlifts (unless you want to do a guided DH trip with Vertigo). Read the article here
